The world is ancient.

It has known things no living tongue can describe, because the creatures that might have described them are long gone, and what remains of them is silence, ruin, and the heaviness that old places carry long after everything has died.

But in this world, humanity survived. They were not the strongest, nor were they gifted with the deep power that ran in the blood of greater things. They had no claws that could tear stone, no songs that bent the will of forests, no fire that lived inside them waiting to be called. What they had was small, fragile, and easily extinguished.

In the deep places, where the dark had always lived, things moved that had no mercy in them. The roads between settlements were not safe. The forests beyond the firelight were not empty. Men who walked alone did not always come home. For a long time, this was simply the cost of being human. A soft and mortal creature in a world shaped by older, harder things.

But humanity was stubborn.

They could not outrun what hunted them, so they learned its patterns. They could not overpower what threatened them, so they learned its weaknesses. Every death taught something. Every narrow escape was studied. Every monster, every poison, every stretch of road where the land turned hostile and the air turned wrong was observed, remembered, and passed on. Knowledge became the one thing no creature could take from them. Carved into stone, kept in stories, carried forward through every catastrophe that tried to erase it.

And yet knowledge was fragile.

Libraries burned. Elders died before they could teach. Wars erased in a single season what careful people had spent lifetimes building. The world remained vast and dark and entirely indifferent to the survival of men. So there came a time when certain people, scholars mostly, those who had seen enough of the world to understand what ignorance cost, built something. A quiet place. A refuge for what humanity had learned. Stone walls and scrolls and the steady, unglamorous work of people who believed that knowledge worth earning was worth protecting. It grew, over generations, into something greater than any of them had planned.

It made humans masters of what they had learned.

A Master is not a knight, not a priest, and not bound by oath to any king or cause. A Master is a person who gave years of their life to learning everything the school believed worth knowing. They studied history and medicine and the habits of dangerous things. They learned to move through hostile lands without becoming part of them. They understood that the sword was a last resort, not a first one, though the world had a way of calling for it sooner than most would prefer. Most lived quietly. They taught. They wrote. They advised those wise enough to listen.

Some walked into the darkest places.

All Masters wore the same necklace, an ornate hand clasping a yellow gem. Some said it was merely a symbol, a reminder of what Masters carried and what they owed to the long chain of the dead who had earned that knowledge before them. Others said it was something more. That the gem remembered. That it kept a record of a life, the weight of what a person had known, done, and chosen, and that when a Master died, the gods took notice. What was granted to those who passed that judgment, no one who returned from death had ever spoken of plainly. Only whispers remained. Only the old stories that travelers told late at night, about figures met on roads that should have been empty, with eyes that had seen something no living person could name.

Whether any of it was true, the world could not say.
